How is your science centre responding to the refugee crisis?

Some organisations want to act as platforms for dialogue and offer citizens a scientific perspective on the issue

No one can ignore the headlines. Migrants have been arriving in Europe in unusually large numbers, causing reactions from unconditional solidarity to pure xenophobia – and all the complex shades in between.

What about science engagement organisations? Does this issue have anything to do with us? This can be a difficult question to answer at the organisational level: it brings us back to our values and missions.

Ecsite invited members who had responded to the refugee crisis to share their initiatives. Some organisations are engaging with refugees as a part of their mission to serve audiences: the Deutsches Museum in Munich, for instance, is introducing young migrants to German technical culture. Other organisations want to act as platforms for dialogue and offer citizens a scientific perspective on the issue, sometimes facilitating encounters between migrants and communities.

Last spring, the Neanderthal Museum in Mettmann, Germany, started Wir Migranten, a series of monthly guided tours in which refugees tell their stories.

“German society is currently reinventing itself, as the welcoming of thousands of refugees questions who we are – or think we are,” said exhibitions manager Bärbel Auffermann. “[But] migrations are a constant feature of human history. No society is ever stable.”
